Pienaar Sees Red In Everton Win

Steven Pienaar was sent off for two reckless challenges but Everton still managed a sublime performance to beat Manchester City 2-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The result dealt a huge blow to City's slim title hopes, as they could find themselves trailing leaders Manchester United by 15 points by the end of the day.

The Toffees closed down the spaces from the first whistle and were playing the better football in the opening 45 minutes.

Kevin Mirallas smashed a shot into the top corner just 13 minutes in but the goal was ruled out incorrectly for offside.

Carlos Tevez responded with a shot in the 23rd minute but it went straight to the goalkeeper while Edin Dzeko couldn't get the power he needed on a shot on the turn.

Pienaar was soon yellow carded for a silly tackle in anger but Everton remained the livelier side and Lean Osman would give them the advantage in the 32nd minute with a swerving shot that gave Joe Hart no chance.

Marouane Fellaini saw a penalty appeal turned down while Victor Anichebe lashed a wild shot over the target.

Tevez smashed a long-range strike just wide in the 40th minute and Javi Garcia would make a mess of his effort from inside the area nine minutes into the second period.

Osman fired just wide five minutes later before Pienaar was given his marching orders after a needless challenge on Garcia.

That left the hosts with 10 men and 30 minutes to play, but City failed to really take advantage of the situation.

Mucha made a good double saved in the 67th minute to deny Tevez and James Milner while Sylvain Distin nodded over with 12 minutes to go.

Fellaini escaped punishment when it seemed that he had handled in the area, but the referee deemed the incident to have happened at the edge of the box.

The Toffees would wrap up the result deep into stoppage time though when Fellaini burst forward and fed Nikica Jelavic who cut inside and fired a curling strike over Hart with the assistance of a slight deflection.
