FC Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho has commented on Lionel Messi's decision to let him to take a penalty in the LaLiga giants' 6-1 thrashing of Sevilla in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.
The defending Copa champions managed to overcome a two-goal deficit to record a 6-1 win at the Camp Nou and an emphatic 6-3 aggregate victory over Sevilla to advance to the semi-finals of the competition.
Former Liverpool star Coutinho, who has come under scrutiny for his performances for the Blaugrana this season, has now revealed his delight at being able to help his side reach the next round, and reserved some praise for his captain, Messi.
"It was a special, unforgettable night," he told Sport English.
"The truth is I needed a game like this, I'm really happy (with my performance). I've been trying everything in every game.
"Things have not been coming off but I have never stopped working hard and thanks to God, things went for me tonight.
"The gesture from Messi shows how great he is. It was all really natural, nothing special had been prepared before the game. I'm grateful to him for letting me take the penalty."
Coutinho has made 30 appearances in all competitions for Barca so far this season, netting eight goals and being on hand to assist a further five strikes.
