The match saw former Los Blancos fullback Danilo make his debut for the Citizens, while Dani Ceballos played his first minutes in a Real jersey.
The game started at a frantic pace, and it was the Spanish side that had the best chances to open the scoring, with Gareth Bale and Isco going close in the first 10 minutes.
City created their first real chance in the 23rd minute, when Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus combined to force Keylor Navas into a good save.
Two minutes later, Aguero managed to find some space in the Los Blancos box and forced the Costa Rican goalkeeper into another good save.
In the 28th minute, it was Real's chance to scare the English side when Casemiro found himself open in the box, but he could only place his header on to the post.
The rest of the half played out much the same and it was surprising that both teams went down the tunnel with a 0-0 scoreline.
The second half saw plenty of changes for both sides, and this seemed to have opened the game up a little bit – seven minutes into the second stanza, City hit the back of the net thanks to a header from Nicolas Otamendi.
England international Raheem Sterling made it 2-0 in the 59th minute after a magical through-ball from Belgian Kevin De Bruyne.
The 67th minute saw John Stones get on the scoresheet, with De Bruyne picking up his third assist of the match.
Brahim Diaz, who is just 17 years old, made the score 4-0 in City's favour in the 81st minute, before Real managed to get a consolation goal courtesy of a strike from Oscar Rodriguez.
