Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola admitted that his side took a huge step to defending their Bundesliga title after their 2-0 win over fourth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday.
The win moves last season’s treble champions to 10 points above second-placed Bayer Leverkusen on 47 points at the half-way mark of the season, another record that Guardiola’s men have broken.
The Bavarians beat an ‘incredible’ Gladbach side who had won their previous eight from nine at home prior to the match thanks to goals from Mario Gotze and Thomas Muller.
The former Barcelona manager was however pleased at the way his side coped with the home side and became the first side to win 15 of their opening 17 games in the Bundesliga.
"I am pleased for the team," he said. "I believe we took a big step forward towards defending our title.”
"We played well against an incredible opponent. It is not easy to win here. We controlled the game.”
"On Wednesday (at Stuttgart) we have a great opportunity to extend our lead with another three points."
