Pellegrini: We Were Not Lucky

Many have suggested that Manchester City were lucky to escape with a 1-1 draw in their third round FA Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, but Sky Blues boss Manuel Pellegrini feels the opposite.

City were made to play the final ten minutes of the match with ten men after Dedryck Boyata was sent from the field for receiving a second yellow card which resulted in Blackburn pouring numbers forward, but City held on for the draw.

“We were not lucky,” said Pellegrini.

“It was a very close match and I think we had more clear options than Blackburn, but we played against a very strong team who were at home.

“They had a lot of motivation and that is normal when you have a Championship team playing against a Premier League team.

“I'm not disappointed.

“Of course, everyone wants to win all of the games, but we were playing against a very strong team at home.

“I am sure if they played like that in the Championship they would be in another position in the table.

“I would be disappointed if we lost and were out of the FA Cup, but we are not out and we must play at home.”

The draw means City’s January plans will have to be rescheduled as they were initially meant to travel to the United Arab Emirates in mid-January for some warm weather training.

Now they will have to stay in England to take part in the third round replay and Pellegrini has no complaints.

“You never know what is better,” said Pellegrini.

“We were going to be travelling to Abu Dhabi and having a friendly match there, now we are going to play against Blackburn Rovers at home.

“What is better? It is impossible to know.

“It (the replay) is not an extra problem. We have to play another match and have the squad to do it, but we will continue making the rotation, that is better for the squad.”
