Pardew Dismisses Rooney Rumours

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew admits that they will be in the market for strikers this summer but completely denied that Wayne Rooney will be one of their targets.

Rumours have suggested that the Magpies could make a big-money move for the United man, who requested a transfer recently.

United refused the request, but that has not stopped rumours from running rife, linking the England international with a number of clubs as the season comes to a close.

"When Demba (Ba) went in January and we didn't secure (Loic) Remy, it was obvious that we were going to need to bring in a striker or two in this summer window, and hopefully we can," Pardew told nufcTV.

"But Rooney won't be one of them, 100 percent, I can assure you."

Pardew then turned his attention to their last day clash with Arsenal, where veteran goalkeeper Steve Harper could play his last game for the club.

"He's been a servant of this football club for 20 years and I've managed him for two and a half seasons," Pardew added.

"He's been an absolute superb professional in and around the place.

"And it's kind of ironic that this has turned out because I think he wants to continue playing next year and I think he's well worthy of a starting place next year - but perhaps somewhere else."
