Bayern Munich have confirmed the signing of Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid for an estimated fee of £8 millionon Friday.
The central midfielder, who signed a two-year contract at Bayern, confirmed has said he is looking forward to a new challenge at the Bavarian club after winning the Champions League with the Los Blancos.
"When Bayern call you, you don't have to think much. I'm looking forward to the new challenges and adventures there," Alonso told the press in an interview in the Santiago Bernabeau Press Room.
Speaking about his departure from the Spanish capital, Alonso claims that leaving the club was difficult and thanked the club for his five years there.
“Leaving Real Madrid has been the hardest decision of my life. Today is a sad day, I close a wonderful stage where we have achieved great things," he continued.
“From day one, the fans made me feel at home, gave me all the love that a player needs. I have to thank Florentino Perez for what he has given me in these five years.”
He then explained that it was entirely his decision to leave the club and that he believed it was the right time to leave.
“It was my decision to leave Real Madrid. No one in the club wanted me to leave. After La Decima a new era has begun. I needed a change," he added.
“It has been an honour to be part of the club. I am a Madridista.”
Alonso moves to Bayern to fill the midfield role vacated by his countryman, Javi Martinez, who picked up a long-term injury against Borussia Dortmund in the German Supercup.
He is also the fifth Spaniard to sign for the German team since Pep Guardiola’s arrival in 2013.
