Martino Hails Messi As World’s Best

New Argentina coach, Gerardo Martino, has hailed Albiceleste captain Lionel Messi as well as his predecessor Alejandro Sabella.

Martino, who was officially appointed as the new Argentina boss on Tuesday, explained why he decided to cut his year-long break short and confirmed he will continue the 'fantastic job' of Sabella, after the latter resigned following the World Cup final defeat against Germany.

He hailed Messi as “the best player in the world” and stated that the “door is open” for players looking to break into the team.

"I don't have much to say. I just want to express how proud I feel to have been given this position and that the people at the AFA (Argentinian Football Association) had faith in me for such an important job," noted the former FC Barcelona manager.

"On my return from Barcelona, I had decided to stop for a while. But obviously, the Argentina team is a job that does not come along every day. It is an emotional commitment because it is a job desired by all, and it caused me to re-analyse things.

“Our goal is to build on the fantastic job done by Alejandro Sabella."

It will be Martino’s second spell as a national team coach after he guided Paraguay between 2006 and 2011, before he taking over at Barcelona last year. However, his stint in Spain had ended prematurely after he failed to win any major trophy with the Catalan giants.

Martino’s first game in charge will be a repeat of the World Cup final against Germany on 03 September.
