Moyes: Fortune Not On Our Side

Manchester United manager, David Moyes, has expressed his dissatisfaction with a couple of the latest referee decision against his side after last night’s loss in the League Cup to Sunderland.

The Red Devils lost their third game in a row, something which they hadn’t done since 2001, and are yet to win a game in 2014.

However, David Moyes insists that his side will turn the corner soon, but they need “a couple of fair decisions” from the officials.

The Scot again wasn’t happy with the penalty which decided the game and also argued about the free-kick that led to Sunderland’s first-half injury-time opener.

“It's difficult, but that's been a little bit the way it's been,” he said.

“I thought we played well after the first 15 minutes. I thought we were very good.

“We defended a terrible free-kick, but how the referee has given a free-kick for that is way beyond me. I just cannot see how that is a free-kick.

“The centre-half and the centre-forward jumped together and he gave them a free-kick.”

The United boss was furious that the assistant referee judged Cleverley’s challenge on Adam Johnson for the deciding penalty, whilst referee Andre Marriner was only 15 yards away.

“We had a player (Adnan Januzaj) booked against Tottenham for the same thing.

“The referee is looking at it - he's in a great position to look at it, right down the line, probably 15 yards, not too close, but the linesman (Peter Bankes) gives it from behind.

“He can't see, he can't see through Patrice Evra. But that's what we are finding at the moment.

“We need a couple of fair decisions. We (should have) had a penalty kick against Tottenham, and we get one given against us tonight for that? My goodness, give me strength."

But despite the dreadful start into 2014, Moyes sees his team on the verge of getting better and is confident his side can still overcome Sunderland in the second leg of the League Cup.

“Yes, we need players back, but you also need a little bit of good fortune to go for you as well. It looks as if we are not getting a lot of that at the moment.

“I have been here before. I'm experienced and I just sense that it's just on the verge of turning.

“I sense that we are about to get a bit better.

“We are going through a difficult time. It is part of football management, it's never going to be an easy ride. It was the biggest challenge getting this job. I think to be the manager of Manchester United is a big challenge, whether it was on the back of wins or defeats.

“Tonight always going to be a tough game. It's only the first part of the game, so we have got a bit more to do in the second leg.”

Moyes was full of praise for the support given by the 5,000-strong United fans who made the trip to Wearside and insists the shadows of Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Charlton and Bryan Robson do not add more pressure on him.

“This [the poor run of form] hasn't happened at Manchester United for a long time. But I thought the support was great. They are sticking with the club, sticking with the manager and that's exactly what you need when you are not doing so well,” Moyes added.

“I find the three of them terrific. Alex is a great sounding-board for me. He is there to help, so is Sir Bobby. He is terrific. Bryan Robson is at the training ground regularly, I speak to him regularly.”

But how long will the Manchester United board and the fans still support their under-fire manager? Have your say in the comment section below.
