Mou: I Took Risks For The Win

Jose Mourinho made one of his trademark triple substitutions at the weekend, bringing on Samuel Eto’o, Eden Hazard and Willian to help Chelsea beat Norwich at Carrow Road.

The game was tied at 1-1, and the Blues looked set to drop more points in The Special One’s less than smooth start to his second life at the club.

But Eto’o’s movement opened the game, and both Willian and Hazard scored to vindicate Mourinho.

After the match, Mourinho admitted it had not gone according to his own game plan, but that when the chips were down, he was brave enough to take the risks required to win.

"My idea was to come here, score the first and the second and try to kill the game as fast we can," he told Sky Sports.

"The players did their best and the opponents deserved to play and these teams are always difficult teams to beat. They [Norwich] fought hard and gave us a very difficult match.

"With the result at 1-0, they didn't risk it; they were waiting for their chance to score a goal. They scored and after that, the game is open football but I'm not here to defend a point, I'm here to try to win so I had to risk a little bit.

"I did, but the responsibility is on the players as they're on the pitch."

Meanwhile, the competition between strikers for a place in the starting line-up at Chelsea remains hot.

Without injured and suspended Fernando Torres, Mou let Demba Ba start against the Canaries. The Senegal hit-man did well enough, and garnered the manager’s praise.

But it was Eto’o who helped turn the result in Chelsea’s favour, and it seems Mou has now adopted a ‘horses for courses’ approach to his attack force.

"I wanted to use Demba because we know that Demba is adapted to these kind of matches, but then the match became different," he said.

"When the match became more open and there was more spaces, it's all about work and I played Samuel.

"They know the conditions and which positions to play on the pitch and they did very well. We deserved a difficult win today."
