There are 50 million reasons why Jose Mourinho wants to keep Fernando Torres at Chelsea.
Rumours emerged last week that The Special One would seek to jettison El Nino from Stamford Bridge, as well as Juan Mata.
Considering the goal nightmares Torres has had since his big money move from Liverpool, it was easy to believe Mourinho would be happy to be free of the Spanish burden, especially after the Blues were linked to Edinson Cavani and Hulk.
But at his unveiling on Monday, Mourinho insisted that he wants to unlock Torres’ 50 million potential, and be the Chelsea manager to “get the best” out of the once prolific marksman.
"Fernando is more than happy to stay and work hard,” Mourinho said.
“If the best for all of us is for Fernando to stay, let's help him and try and get the best out of him."
The Blues continue to be linked to Cavani in particular, who told Sky Sports that “it would be a pleasure” to play under Mourinho.
But The Special One has denied that the Chelsea squad requires a full-scale overhaul in the transfer market.
"It would be easier if we did that, but we don't want to do that," he said.
"We are happy to go with these fantastic, talented boys.
"We are happy to show that the investment Chelsea made in recent seasons. We want to go in this direction. The one or two we may buy are complements because the structure and philosophy is this one."
