Former Real Madrid player and current sporting director, Pedrag Mijatovic, says Luka Modric has become as important to the Los Blancos as Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 1998 Champions League winner said that Modric’s calmness in the centre of Real’s system is essential to the strong form of Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
“Modric collects all the threads in a great team,” Mijatovic toldMarca.
“He’s the head of midfield in a complicated environment. Every day in Madrid pressure is coming at you from all sides.”
Mijatovic himself still remembers the demand for results and the media pressure at such a big club, and feels Modric has grown among to be Madrid’s best players since joining the Bernabeu in the summer of 2012.
“There is demand for results and trophies,” Mijatovic continued.
“And fans have the highest aesthetic criteria. The media pressure is terrible too.
“Modric not only withstands the pressure but has grown among it to be Madrid’s best player, with Ronaldo.”
Real's sporting director also welcomed Atletico’s involvement in the title challenge, which has uplifted the ‘boring domination’ by the two big rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid.
“The domination of Real and Barcelona was getting a little boring,” the 45-year-old added.
“As a fan of Madrid I’m clear that I want the club to win the League.
“But Barcelona has a brilliant team and have been at a high level for years.
“Hopefully though Madrid win the title.”
