Following his side’s 2-1 win over Belarus in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday, Spain’s debutant Michu admitted he was eternally grateful to the coach for opportunity handed to him.
Goals from Xavi and Alvaro Negredo handed Sapin the win that sees them at the top of Group I and only needing appoint secure qualification to Brazil next year.
Vicente del Bosque handed Michu his first start in national team colours before being replaced by Alvaro Negredo just before the hour mourk.
“I am very pleased and very grateful. I appreciate the confidence the coach has shown in me,” said Michu.
“I am eternally grateful to the squad, everything has been very easy.”
Michu added that he was delighted with the result, which means they need just one point in their final game against Georgia to seal their place at the World Cup next year
“It is always tough against teams like that, we knew they were going to lock up and give us little space and few chances,” added Michu.
“You can dominate possession, but you have to get through these games.
“In the second half we scored two goals, closed the game and got the three points.”
