Barcelona coach, Gerardo Martino, has confirmed that Lionel Messi will return to the squad for Barcelona’s Copa del Rey clash with Getafe on Wednesday.
Messi has been out for two months with injury, but returned to practice last week and Martino confirmed after the Elche match that the FIFA Ballon d'Or nominee will only play when he is mentally ready.
He wasn’t included in the squad for the 4-0 victory over Elche at the weekend, but Martino confirmed in his pre-match press conference that the Argentine superstar will return for tomorrow's cup match.
“What has changed is that he has a few training sessions done now,” said Martino.
“The Elche game he had only two or three before, and now he has trained some more days and has done a period of good work. I have spoken with him and all he needs to do now is take part in a competitive game.
“This was the normal way to do things, and everything should hopefully continue as normal from now. We will find out tomorrow if Messi starts or not.
“May be he is lacking some match-fitness, but that doesn’t matter with him. It just matters that he is fit again.”
Messi has been named in the 18 player squad along with Victor Valdes, who also returns from the injury he suffered in Spain’s 1-0 international loss to Bafana Bafana.
If Messi is mentally ready, Martino will surely give his star player a run-in in tomorrow’s Copa del Rey match in order to prepare him for Barca’s massive La Liga clash with Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
