Messi And CR7 In Goal Duet

Sometimes it seems as if Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are Betty Hutton and Howard Keel in the classic movie, ‘Annie Get Your Gun.’

Every match that Barcelona or Real Madrid plays is like a duet of ‘Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better’ between the two best players in the world.

On Wednesday morning, the football world was agog with CR7’s goal return for Los Blancos.

He had just scored his 21st hat-trick for Real Madrid in the Champions League against Galatasaray, to take his return to an incredible 206 goals in 204 appearances for the club.

But as has seemed the case for the last few seasons, Ronaldo’s feats in front of goal only bring the best out of La Pulga Atomica, and inspire him to emulate, if not better, his Portuguese goal rival.

And now, Thursday morning belongs to Messi, after his hat-trick in the Champions League against Ajax Amsterdam stole CR7’s thunder.

In his last 224 appearances for Barca, the Argentine superstar has scored a staggering 242 goals.

Whereas CR7 has bagged 21 hat-tricks for Real, Messi has 24 for Barca.

He is now the second-highest scorer of all-time in the Champions League with 62 goals in the competition, and he will surely pass Real legend Raul as the UCL’s top marksman soon.

It seems inevitable that he will then become the top-scorer in all European club football history.

After the match against Ajax however, just like CR7 did the day before, Messi was keen to downplay his exploits and to to trumpet the strength of his team instead.

"We played better in second half. It's a matter of time, we are adapting ourselves to the season," he told Canal +.

"It's good to have alternatives. We got many players to do different things and take benefit of turnovers.”

“We want to dedicate it to [manager] Martino because he's not living a good moment now," Messi added, paying his respects after the father of the Barca manager passed away shortly before the game.
