At the other end, the in-form Robin van Persie found a chance of his own when he collected on the edge of the area, but also failed to find the target. There was another chance for the Dutch striker on the stroke of half-time, but this time his header was easily dealt with by Petr Cech.
After the break United found themselves in with a chance following a brilliant counter-attack by Phil Jones, but his cross went wayward as the chance went begging.
The second period proved rather scrappy as both sides struggled to make their final passes count.
With 20 minutes to play, Wayne Rooney was introduced to the match and immediately made an impact as he connected with an Antonio Valencia cross, but the striker’s header flew just wide of the target.
Chelsea took a hold of the game four minutes from time when Ramires instigated a brilliant attack which resulted in Mata sneaking in the goal via the inside of the post.
The afternoon went from bad to worse for the Red Devils as Rafael was then sent off for a cynical on David Luiz.
