Martinez Not Focussed On Jelavic

Despite speculation being rife that Everton striker Nikica Jelavic will be leaving the club in the January transfer window, coach Roberto Martinez says his side is focussing solely on their English Premier League match against Southampton on Sunday.

After joining from Rangers in 2012 and scoring nine goals in 13 appearances, Jelavic has struggled in an Everton shirt and has since only managed to find the back of the net seven times in 37 league appearances.

And that has seen the Croatian international become second choice in the striking department for Everton behind Romelu Lukaku.

Martinez admits it may be good for the striker to move onto another club with the World Cup around the corner, and says a couple of clubs have shown interest in him.

The Toffees manager, though, says that his team are not focussed on that at the moment and are only concerned with their game against Southampton where a win could see them up to fourth place in the league if Liverpool loses to Chelsea.

“We've had a couple of enquiries from two different clubs for one of our players,” said Martinez.

“Nikica Jelavic is someone who we have made it very clear to - we've had a conversation and he has the World Cup around the corner.

“He needs to be playing minutes and we understand that. We'll always try to give it a good assessment of the situation, but that's not affecting anyone at the club.

“All we are focusing on is being as good as we can on Sunday.

“Whatever happens in January will be for the good of the football club and that's where the work is.”
