The English Premier League is often referred to as the best league in the world. Every transfer window, highly-rated players from across the globe say they dream of playing in Dear Old Blighty.
But consider this debatable statement: If Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez go to Real Madrid, there will only be ONE player left in England who features on, or comes close to featuring on the list of the world’s ten best players.
That player is Chelsea star Juan Mata, the Spanish international midfielder who could jink and pass his way into most starting line-ups in top club football.
That is why the story broken by Spanish daily Marca this week beggars belief.
According to the paper, new Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, has told Blues owner Roman Abramovich that he wants to sell Mata and striker Fernando Torres.
The second half of that reported transfer list is not hard to believe: question marks hang over Torres despite his better end-of-season form. But Mata? Is Mourinho on crack?
“New Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has wasted no time in getting down to work, with one of his first moves directly affecting the future of Fernando Torres and Juan Mata. According to Radio MARCA, the London club has put the Spanish pair up for sale,” Marca claim.
“If the reports are to believed, the 'Special One' has asked Chelsea chairman Roman Abramovich to listen to offers for Mata and Torres as he looks to raise funds for a shopping spree.”
Former Chelsea boss, Rafa Benitez, made Mata his focal point when he took over at Stamford Bridge on an interim basis.
And the ex-Valencia playmaker was a pivotal force as the Blues finished the season third on the Premier League log and won the Europa League.
Benitez went on record to say he thought Mata should even have been in the running for the EPL’s player of the season award, and not only Chelsea fans agreed.
And so if the reports are true, and Mourinho really does want to sell Juan Mata, Chelsea fans will have to hope The Special One has a special trick up his sleeve.
Can you see Chelsea actually selling Juan Mata?
