Manchester United were not punished for their wastefulness by a plucky Real Sociedad as they claimed a 1-0 win in their UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday night.
United got off to the perfect start as Rooney did brilliantly to beat a number of defenders before his strike hit the post but Inigo Martínez knocked the rebound into his own goal.
United were without Robin van Persie for the encounter but Shinji Kagawa was given a chance by David Moyes and his combination play at times with the brilliant Rooney and age-defying Ryan Giggs created a number of chance for the hosts.
Sociedad, on their part, also created some decent openings and had the home fans on the edge of their seats up until the final whistle.
Claudio Bravo did well to keep out a strike from Rooney in the 11th minute while Javier Hernandez had a goal ruled out correctly for offside after a lovely one-two between Rooney and Giggs.
The Spanish side showed their potential at the other end with a ferocious deflected strike from Haris Seferovic bringing a smart stop out of David De Gea.
The visitors went even closer in the 38th minute through a free-kick from Antoine Griezmann which clattered into the angle.
Carlos Vela was within inches of connecting with a cross into the middle two minutes after the break before Jonny Evans almost put the ball into his own goal after a nervous start to the second period from United.
They settled soon after though and went on to waste numerous chances with Phil Jones heading straight at the goalkeeper when he seemed set to score while Antonio Valencia hit the post and Kagawa couldn't sink the rebound.
Alberto de la Bella had hit the crossbar with a cracking strike in the 56th minute while Kagawa should have fired home from near the penalty spot after running onto a pass from Valencia.
Rooney saw a late penalty appeal waved away while Bravo had to be alert to slide out a deny Ashley Young a late tap in as United's early strike proved to be enough.
