In a game of few clear chances, Norwich and Newcastle played out to a dull 0-0 stalemate at Carrow Road on Saturday.
It was a less than favourable result for the visitors as Newcastle now find themselves in 16th place on the table and facing a battle for Premier League survival.
There was an early chance for the Magpies as Gabriel Obertan ran up the left and got a cross in, but Mark Bunn was able to make the save before Papiss Cisse could pounce. On 17 minutes it was again Obertan who was causing trouble for the Canaries defenders as Bunn was called to make a save.
While Norwich made numerous forays into the Newcastle area, it was the final ball that appeared to be lacking as crosses were regularly dealt with by the visiting defenders.
After the break there was a good chance for Norwich to go ahead when Wes Hoolahan crossed to Bradley Johnson, but Obertan turned defender and was on hand to avert the danger.
The Canaries came even closer on 67 minutes when Russell Martin struck one on the volley, but could only hang his head in frustration as the ball came crashing back off the woodwork.
A superb save from Ruud Krul to deny Anthony Pilkington from close range then also ensured the scores stayed level.
