Two deflected goals and a strike from Jese Rodriguez saw Real Madrid take a commanding lead in their two leg Copa del Rey semifinal against Atletico Madrid at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night.
Real Madrid dominated from the onset to win the first leg 3-0 in front of a packed home crowd.
The home side made their intentions clear early on and created their first chance on goal in the tenth minute when Karim Benzema met a corner-kick with a strong header, but he saw his attempt cleared off the goalline.
Seven minutes later though and Real Madrid did find the back of the net in a fortuitous fashion as a Pepe shot from the edge of the box took a wicked deflection off Emiliano Insua and wrong footed the keeper, 1-0.
In the 29th minute Real Madrid almost scored a second deflected goal when an 18-yard shot from Luka Modric clipped the heel of Godin and went inches over the crossbar.
The home side continued to dominate the remainder of the half, but could not breach the Atletico Madrid defence.
The half ended 1-0 in favour of Real Madrid.
The second 45 continued in the same fashion and Real Madrid finally found their second goal just before the hour mark.
Angel Di Maria played Rodriguez through on goal and he made no mistake, toe-poking the ball under the onrushing keeper, 2-0.
Real Madrid then confirmed their dominance in the fixture with their third goal in the 73rd minute.
Unfortunately for Atletico Madrid it was another deflected goal as Di Maria smashed a shot off the heel of Joao Miranda and into the net, 3-0.
Real Madrid continued to press forward after that, but could not add to their three goals.
The second-leg of this semifinal will take place at the Vincente Calderon next Tuesday.
