Madrid Beat Granada To Go Top

Second-half goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema saw Real Madrid labour to a 2-0 win over Granada to go top of the standings on Saturday afternoon at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The result sees Madrid climb above Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, whose fixtures are coming up later in the weekend.

The game opened at a quick pace that saw the visiting team, Granada straight on the attack, and immediately get the first corner of the game in the second minute, but it was cleared away.

In the fifth minute, Madrid went on the attack and Cristiano Ronaldo broke through the Granada defence but fired his shot just wide of the far post from 20 yards out.

In the tenth minute, the home team played a well taken corner-kick that saw Angel Di Maria make a clever pass to Daniel Carvajal who whipped in a cross that Granada midfielder Manuel Iturra headed against his own bar.

Marcelo made a deep cross in the 22nd minute to Karim Benzema who couldn't connect clearly with the ball, and headed wide.

In the 27th minute Real Madrid got the ball in the back of the net, Benzema the scorer, but the goal was ruled out after two players were spotted to be offside.

Ronaldo attempted a brilliant bicycle kick in the 46th minute that brought the best out of Granada keeper Roberto Fernandez, who made an equally brilliant save from point blank range to deny the recently crowned World Footballer Of The Year the opener.

In the 48th minute, Benzema appeared to have finally found the opener for the home side after Di Maria made a superb cross to the striker, but his header bounced off the crossbar.

The goal finally came for Madrid, as Luca Modric fed Ronaldo with a pass, he turned on the edge of the box and fired low past keeper Roberto, to make 1-0 in the 56th minute, for his 22nd goal of the season.

In the 62nd minute Madrid received a freekick just outside the box, that Ronaldo teed off to Di Maria who sent it over the bar.

The home side made it 2-0 in the 74th minute as Marcelo was freed inside the box by Ronaldo, and unselfishly made a pass to Benzema to tap in from close range.

In the 80th minute, Granada made a double subsitution to try come back into the game.

However, Madrid had the result in the bag and the three points keeps them firmly in the title race.
