Luis Suarez has made his eagerly awaited debut for FC Barcelona and was welcomed with standing ovations, while Brazil right-back Dani Alves was booed by the club’s own fans.
Barcelona thrashed Club Leon 6-0 in the Joan Gamper Trophy on Monday, which is the club’s official opening to the season.
When the players were presented Luis Suarez received standing ovations as he took to the pitch for the first time and the applause was only topped by Lionel Messi’s introduction.
Suarez came on as a substitute in the 77th minute and the crowd again erupted, even though the Uruguayan failed to score.
Dani Alves, however, who openly played with the thought of leaving Camp Nou this summer, was greeted by boos when he was presented to the fans.
On the pitch, Barcelona recorded a comfortable 6-0 win with goals from Messi, Neymar (2), starlet Munir (2) and Sandro Ramirez.
Before the game, new Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique, addressed the crowd and said: “This group of players is different, unique. They will need your help when they are having a bad day, when things are not going as we would like, that is when we will need you the most.
“Our main goal is that at the end of the season you are proud of our effort and our work. And we will fight for that. Visca Barça and Visca Catalonia.”
