Love him or hate him, you have to admit that Luis Suarez is a world class footballer.
In fact, there is a growing consensus that ‘El Pistolero’ is one of the few players in world football capable of winning games all by himself, alongside luminaries like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and lately Gareth Bale.
Liverpool fans have come to revere the Uruguayan’s match-winning abilities, and would dearly prefer him to stay despite the obvious flaws in his win-at-all-costs character.
And it is easy to see why Real Madrid are considering meeting Liverpool’s estimated £50 million asking price for the former Ajax Amsterdam skipper.
Last night against France, Suarez scored the kind of goal only he seems capable of: bursting into space, jinking past his marker with a combination of speed, strength and dancing feet, using his body to shield the ball and then slicing it into the back of the net from a dubious angle, before the goalkeeper even saw him raise his vicious boot.
Having come on as a second half substitute, it was Suarez who gave Uruguay their 1-0 friendly win over Les Bleus in Montevideo. And France boss Didier Deschamps admits his team were powerless to stop the Liverpool man.
"We had opportunities in the first half to take the lead but then they brought on a player like Suarez," Deschamps told TF1.
"That changed things a lot. Even though he changed things and they some created chances, we kept up our levels of effort. After the goal they slowed the game down but we still had the opportunity to equalise.
"There were a lot of changes made on both sides. It was a pretty even game all things told and one moment from Suarez made the difference. "
