FC Barcelona striker Luis Suarez and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas are valued amongst some of the best buys in Europe’s top five leagues this season.
According to the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES), they have statistically measured each transferred player’s performance and by doing so were given a score per area of the game, that’s as long as they played 50% of each match.
The statistics showed us the following top performing players this season: Luis Suárez (Barcelona) and Dejan Lovren (Liverpool) for rigour, Walter Gargano (Napoli) for recovery, Xabi Alonso (Bayern Munich) and Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea) for distribution, Karim Bellarabi (Bayer Leverkusen) for take ons and Diego Costa (Chelsea) for shooting.
CIES explained their rankings in a little more detail, saying that they identify six complementary areas of play. These areas relate to attack (shooting, chance creation, and take on), passing (distribution) and defence (recovery, rigour).
"Each key area of the game requires footballers with specific skills. Shooting refers to the ability of players to take advantage of goal opportunities through accurate shooting," says CIES.
"Chance creation is the ability to put teammates in a good position to score.
“Take on refers to the ability to create dangerous situations by successfully challenging opponents.
“Distribution is the ability to keep a hold on the game through efficient passing.
“Finally, recovery and rigour refer to the ability to minimise goal opportunities for opponents through proficient interception work, and respectively robust duelling."
Fabregas has assisted in 20 goals this season, while Luis Suarez has assisted in 13 and scored 10 of his own.
