Manchester United boss, Louis van Gaal, has explained why he bought Angel Di Maria for a British transfer record fee of £59.7 million.
Van Gaal compared Di Maria to signing Arjen Robben for Bayern Munich in 2010, whom he also bought in the final week of the transfer window.
“I have bought Di Maria because he play inside and wide,” he told reporters.
“Maybe you remember when I was trainer at Bayern Munich, I bought Arjen Robben and he could also play at wings and inside.
“Then I have always the opportunity to change, but that is a process.
“He has to adapt our culture our philosophy. He can contribute to the process of team building.”
The Dutchman hailed Di Maria as a ‘world-class’ player who will frighten defences in the English Premier League.
"He's a world-class midfielder, but most importantly he is a team player. There is no doubting his immense natural talent,” he told the club’s official website.
"He is a tremendously fast and incisive left-footed player who puts fear into the most accomplished defences.
“His dribbling skills and his ability to take on and beat opponents are a joy to watch. He is an excellent addition to the team.”
