A brace from Luis Suarez helped Liverpool to a thrilling 5-3 win over Stoke City in an English Premier League match at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday.
Liverpool were made to work for the three points after they saw their two goal lead in the first half eroded before a fine second half performance saw them claim all three points.
Liverpool got off to the brightest of starts as they took the lead as early as the fifth minute when a long distance strike from Aly Cissokho cannoned off Ryan Shawcross and found its way into the back of the net, 1-0.
In the 20th minute Philippe Coutinho came within inches of doubling his side’s lead when he curled a shot from just inside the box agonisingly over the crossbar.
Twelve minutes later and Suarez did manage to find Liverpool’s second as he capitalised on a sloppy back pass from Marc Wilson, intercepting his header and then proceeding to beat the keeper, 2-0.
Stoke, though, were not to be outdone and hit back in the 39th minute as Peter Crouch powerfully headed home left wing cross, 2-1.
A minute before the break Charlie Adam found the equaliser for Stoke with a stunning strike that flew past the Reds’ goalkeeper, 2-2.
The start of the second 45 saw Liverpool pushing forward and they were rewarded for their efforts when the referee awarded them a soft penalty in the 50th minute after Wilson nudged Raheem Sterling inside the box.
Steven Gerrard stepped up and calmly slotted the ball home to restore Liverpool’s lead, 3-2.
Suarez came to the party again in the 71st minute as Daniel Sturridge slipped him through on goal down the left flank; the Uruguayan drove into the box and produced a sublime finish to double his side’s lead 4-2.
Stoke, however, tried to fight back once more and managed to pull yet another goal back in the 85th minute as Jonathan Walters produced a clinical finish in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, 4-3.
The result, though, was put beyond doubt three minutes later as Sturridge found himself through on goal. The striker saw his first attempt blocked, but was quick to pounce on the rebound to kill off the match, 5-3.
