Liverpool defender Glen Johnson could be facing over two months on the treatment table, as he struggles to recover from the injury he picked up in the Reds’ recent win over Manchester United.

England international Johnson had started the season in great form, and had been vital to Liverpool’s strong defensive showings in three 1-0 wins that left them top of the table at the international break.

And so it was a major blow when he limped off the Anfield pitch with an ankle injury, after he and team-mate Lucas Leiva collided in a challenge with United defender Patrice Evra.

Liverpool had been hoping that Johnson would recover during the Premier League’s brief break, but the club’s medical staff now believes that he is likely to be unable to play for 10 weeks.

Meanwhile, new Liverpool defender, Tiago Ilori, says that he is open to playing for either England or Portugal in the future, although he is leaning towards the Iberian nation.

Signed on transfer deadline day, Ilori grew up in London, but moved to Portugal as a boy and played for their U18, U19 and U20 teams.

With his reputation as a calm and technical ball-playing central defender, Ilori could have a bright senior international future if he blossoms at Liverpool.

And he is already thinking about where his allegiance lies.

"I think I would like to stay loyal to Portugal as I've played in every age group for them," Ilori told the Liverpool Echo.

"But I would never close any doors and there is no decision to make yet.

“If I have the choice then it is not a bad choice to have.”
