Liverpoolhave long made it clear how far they will go to keep Luis Suarez placated at the club.
They supported him when the FA took Patrice Evra’s word over his in their race slur trial.
They stood by him when he bit Branislav Ivanovic.
They treated him with tough love when he flirted with Real Madrid.
And they laughed out loud when Arsenal tried to buy him for £40 million + £1.
Many more teams would have grown impatient with the truculent Uruguayan. But the fact is, he is one of the best players on the planet, the best player at Anfield, and Liverpool need him for as long as they can have him.
And so ahead of their mouth-watering Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, the Reds have again gone out on a limb to make him feel special and important.
Worried that Suarez could be burned out before the match, after playing in Uruguay’s World Cup playoff against Jordan, Reds owner John W Henry has offered the striker the use of his private jet.
Suarez will play for Uruguay in Montevideo on Wednesday night (although he probably does not need to, considering the 5-0 lead his team has from the first leg).
The earliest he could be back at Anfield travelling with the hoi polloi is Thursday night.
But Liverpool are concerned that will not leave Suarez enough time help them establish a six point gap over their local rivals.
And so billionaire Henry has offered El Pistolero a direct flight from Uruguay to England on his luxurious plane.
Everton were surely hoping to face a jet-lagged Suarez in the derby. But now, during his luxury flight he could be kept cool by servants waving palm fronds as tiny fish nibble his feet, which means he should hit the ground running and snarling.
