Ajax Amsterdam are bracing themselves for big money bids for their mercurial midfielder, Christian Eriksen.
The soon-to-be 21-year-old Danish international has featured on the transfer radars of top clubs from across Europe for more than two seasons, thanks to his stylish brand of playmaking.
Until now he has remained focused on life at the Amsterdam Arena, but Eriksen has now put his suitors on red alert, after turning down the chance to sign a contract extension with his Dutch paymasters.
And red is an appropriate colour, amid rumours that interest from English Premier League side Liverpool has turned Eriksen’s head.
“Christian has informed us that he doesn’t want to sign a new contract right now,” Ajax’s technical director, Marc Overmars told sporten.dk.
“I think he and his agent want to see what opportunities present themselves this summer.”
Eriksen is rated as one of European football’s brightest up-and-coming talents, with Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle also credited with interest in his signature.
But for now, it is reportedly Liverpool who are the most likely to sign Eriksen should he be enticed away from Ajax.
The Reds are slowly building a squad filled with talented youngsters, as they seek to implement Brendan Rodgers' long-term vision for the club.
And for them to secure the services of a player like Eriksen would surely be a coup, and an endorsement of the direction the Anfield club has taken.
