Messi Celebrates Milestone In Argentina Win, Brazil Held

Lionel Messi celebrated an incredible milestone as Argentina beat Uruguay in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier in the early hours of Monday morning, while Neymar's frustrations with Brazil continued.

Argentina 3-0 Uruguay

Scaloni's men appeared to make light work of Uruguay early on Monday morning as their impressive unbeaten run in 2021 was extended to what is now 13 matches without a loss.

Messi opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a fortuitous outside-of-the-foot strike that appeared intended to be a cross into the Uruguay box. The 34-year-old, who captained his nation to 2021 Copa America triumph earlier this year, has now scored 80 times for Argentina in 155 matches.

Just before half-time, Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo De Paul doubled the Albiceleste's lead with a neat right-footed finish, with Lautaro Martinez credited with the assist for his strike.

Argentina then went 3-0 ahead in the 62nd minute after Messi wormed his way out of a tight situation to spread the ball wide to Giovani Lo Celso, whose first-time cross found Martinez in the Uruguay danger area.

The 24-year-old Inter Milan forward has now found the back of the net on 16 occasions for the South American giants, with four of those goals coming in nine World Cup qualifiers.

Colombia 0-0 Brazil

The Selecao dropped points for the first time in their World Cup qualifying campaign after being held by Colombia. While Neymar and his colleagues had chances to win the game, Los Cafeteros goalkeeper David Ospina proved unbeatable.

Neymar has now scored just one goal for Brazil in his past seven international appearances, with the Paris Saint-Germain superstar seemingly still affected by their Copa America final loss to Argentina.

Other CONMEBOL results:

Bolivia 1-0 Peru

Venezuela 2-1 Ecuador

Chile 2-0 Paraguay
