Lewa Backtracks On Bayern Comments

Robert Lewandowski has backtracked on his claim that he will pen a pre-contract agreement with Bayern Munich in January.

After he helped Borussia Dortmund to a German Cup win over 1860 Munich, who share a stadium with Bayern, the 25-year-old was asked if he would confirm his anticipated move to Bavaria in January.

"Yes, because I can officially sign the new contract in January,” he answered.

However, immediately after the story broke, Lewandowski realised his statement had been ill-advised.

Dortmund fought tooth and nail to keep him, even giving him a hefty pay rise for his last season at the club.

And so he now says that his comment was misinterpreted.

“Looking at the video [of his comments] again, I became frightened of it,” Lewandowski told Sport Bild.

“What I really wanted to express right after the game was that I will be able to pen a new deal in January at the earliest.

“I only wanted to answer the question of when I will finally be taking a stand on my future. Like I have said many times, I want to leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer. Everything else I can only say in January.”

Everybody knows that Lewa wants to leave, and the sense is that he is now simply trying to keep both his paymasters and his suitors happy.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc meanwhile, refuses to even consider that the club will not get its own way, by keeping a committed striker until they are ready to let him go.

“From our side there is nothing more to be said. We want to have a reasonable last year [with Lewandowski] -- both sides have said that -- and things are good,” he told Ruhr Nachrichten.
