Tottenham Hotspur made a shock exit from the FA Cup as they lost 2-1 to Championship side Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday.
Luke Varney and Ross McCormack gave United a two-goal cushion, while Clint Dempsey managed to pull one back for the north London club. South African striker Davide Somma watched the majority of the match from the substitutes’ bench, but was given a brief run in stoppage time.
Just 15 minutes into the match it was the home side who took the lead when Varney broke past the Tottenham defence and produced a stunning solo effort which curled past a hapless Brad Friedel.
Spurs came close to equalising soon after, but Gylfi Sigurdsson saw his header go wide from close range. Leeds goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown was then tested on two occasions by Tom Huddlestone and Gareth Bale, but came up tops each time.
Five minutes into the second half Leeds doubled their lead when Scottish winger McCormack produced a brilliant curling effort which gave Brad Friedel little chance.
Just before the hour, Spurs were given some hope when Dempsey found the net with a classy header, but the visitors failed to build on their momentum and went crashing out of the Cup competition.
