Chievo derailed Lazio’s assault on the Serie A title as they beat them 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.
The visitors handed out a free lesson on taking your chances, needing only one sight of goal as Alberto Paloschi netted just after the hour mark.
Lazio may have had the better of the game but were not up to their usual standard and rarely tested Christian Puggioni in the Chievo goal.
Midfielders Hernanes and Stefano Mauri were left out of the team and Lazio coach Vladimir Petkovic paid dearly for his gamble.
Abdoulay Konko produced the game’s first shot on goal in the 23rd minute but he could only direct it straight down the keeper’s throat.
Sergio Floccari's effort minutes into the second half also failed to make Puggioni work as he needed only to punch it clear.
Mauri was introduced in the second half and almost made an impact but his header went harmlessly wide.
The home side were punished moments later as a shot from Vacek hit the underside of the crossbar before falling to Paloschi to stroke home.
Puggioni would have been wishing every day between the sticks was like this one as Andre Dias was the next player to shoot straight at him.
Mauri tried his luck in vain soon afterwards as Lazio’s Scudetto challenge faded slightly.
