Italy snatched a last-gasp 1-1 draw in Holland thanks to a stoppage time goal from Marco Verratti at the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday.
Jeremain Lens' 33rd minute goal looked to have been enough for the Oranje but Italy would strike late on to deny the hosts.
Gianluigi Buffon pulled off the first good save 18 minutes in to deny Adam Maher while the veteran stopper would deny the same player eight minutes later before saving Kevin Strootman's shot on the follow up.
Mario Balotelli had a chance in the 32nd minute after bringing down a pass from Andrea Pirlo but his shot whistled past the post.
Netherlands would strike a minute later when Italy failed to clear and Lens worked some space before smashing his shot past Buffon.
Strootman lashed a long-range strike just wide in the 66th minute after some patient work from the Dutch while Buffon would have to deny Lens a second with 20 minutes to go.
Dirk Kuyt produced a weak effort with two minutes to go after being slipped through and that would be punished in stoppage time as Verrati lifted his shot over Tim Krul after exchanging pass with Gilardino to secure the draw.
