Frank Lampard has signed a one-year contract extension with Chelsea, in the afterglow of skippering the Blues to Europa League glory.
The veteran midfielder’s Stamford Bridge future had been in doubt all season long, with the club seemingly keen to dispense of his services.
Despite the fact that he is 34-years-old and may not be the fastest midfielder in the business, Lampard remains one of Cheslea’s most influential players.
A true box-to-box midfield behemoth, he recently became the club’s all-time top scorer, surpassing Bobby Tambling’s 202 goals for the Blues.
For that reason alone, Chelsea should have thought twice about summarily ending its association with a bona fide club legend, especially after he continually insisted he did not want to leave.
And Chelsea ultimately did the right thing, rewarding Lampard for his nearly 13 years of service with the contract extension he desired.
“Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce Frank Lampard has signed a one-year extension to his contract,” the Blues said on their website.
“Already the third-highest appearance-maker in the club's history, next season will be the vice-captain's 13th at Stamford Bridge.”
Lampard meanwhile, expressed his joy at signing the deal after what had been a superb night for the club in Amsterdam.
And he thanked owner Roman Abramovich for warming his steely oligarch’s heart to let him stay a little while longer.
“I'm absolutely delighted. Everybody knows I always maintained the dream was to stay at Chelsea. We've been talking for ages and even though it went on for quite a period it was always amicable,” the England international said.
“I want to thank Mr Abramovich for everything he's done in making the dream a reality. I love this club, the staff, the players and especially the supporters, who have treated me fantastically since the day I arrived.
“The thought of helping the club to more success in the forthcoming years is all I ever wanted. I couldn't be happier.”
