La Liga Saturday Wrap

Villareal-Sevilla (1-2)

Juan Cala scored Sevilla’s opening goal before being sent off as his side recorded a 2-1 win over Villareal at the El Madrigal on Saturday afternoon.

The fixture was the first of the league games to get underway and it welcomed some exciting action as soon as the 24th minute.

The ball from a free kick found its way to Cala and he did well to rise and head in a thunderous effort into the inside of the left post. An incredible long-range header!

In the second-half it could have been 2-0 up on the hour mark if only Manuel Trigueros wasn’t denied by the gloves of Antonio Pimparel as Sevilla.

But they needed just 12 more minutes to secure the win. Villareal’s defence wasn’t unable to make any clearance on Carlos Bacca who found the back of the net after a perfect cross.

Cala then went from hero to zero after he took down an opponent with a nasty sliding tackle and the referee gave him a straight red card, resulting in a penalty for the home side

Jeremy Perbet cancelled out the deficit from the spot but it was merely a consolation goal as they lost 2-1.

Aleix Vidal came close to converting a wonderful cross inside the box into a great goal in the 14th minute. He took a great first touch and released a daisy-cutter towards the middle of the target but was denied by Guillermo Sara who pulled off a fabulous save.

Betis had another chance to find the equalizer just after the hour mark but Jorge Molina was guilty of a missing a big chance. His strong header went at the left post, but the goalkeeper showed all his agility and made a world class save.

Diego Costa received the ball inside the penalty area, after a free kick, and scores with an effort intothe bottom left hand corner.

Atletico’s lead lasted just ten minutes when Pedro Rios (scored following a great individual effort. He skipped past a few defenders and fired the ball past the diving goalkeeper. A brilliant strike.

But it was Diego Costa who had the last laugh from the penalty spot with a shot which went inside the right post, before Levante were forced to finish off the final minutes of the game with a man less following Juanfran’s red card.

Granada-Real Socieded (1-3)

Carlos Vela scored twice as Real Socieded walked away with a 3-1 win over Granada at the Nuevo Los Cármenes stadium on Saturday evening.

Real Sociedad needed an amazing piece of skill by Carlos Vela, just 30 minutes into the match, to break the deadlock. The player picked a cross on the edge of the 18-yard box and hammered it into the bottom right corner.

Another spectacular moment followed just seven minutes later when Piti skipped past the defenders to blast a long-range strike at goal to make it 1-1.

Antoine Griezmann restored Real Sociedad’s lead when he was lucky to stand in the way of a rebound. He took advantage of it and powered the ball into the bottom left corner of the target, leaving the goalkeeper completely helpless as they walked into the break 2-1 up.
