Atletico Madrid ran out 2-0 winners over bottom of the table Real Betis at the Estadio Benito Villa on Sunday, thanks to goals from Gabi and Diego Costa.
Atletico Madrid came into the game knowing that a win would take them to the top of the La Liga table until neighbours Real Madrid host Barcelona in El Clasico.
The capital side had the first chance of the game in the eighth minute of play as Raul Garcia saw his effort deflected out for a corner by Paulao.
The visitors then had the ball in the back of the net in the 34th minute of the game but fortunately for the bottom of the table side, the linesman raised his flag for offside and Diego Costa’s goal did not count.
Real Betis managed to produce a half-chance on the 30 minute mark when Juanfran whipped in a dangerous cross, but it was well cleared by Godin.
The home side then almost grabbed the lead five minutes into the second-half as Juan Carlos latched onto a clever ball from Nono, but his shot came crashing off the post and out of danger.
Betis midfielder Rodriguez was then given his marching orders for a silly handball in the middle of the park for a second yellow of the game with 56 minutes on the clock.
Atletico did not wait long to make their numerical advantage count and opened the scoring in the 58th minute through Gabi’s long range effort which found the bottom corner to make it 1-0 to the visitors.
Costa then doubled the away side’s lead five minutes later when the striker pounced on a loose ball in the box before firing his shot into the bottom corner, 2-0 to Atletico.
The win moves Atletico up to 70 points and top of the table due to their superior head-to-head record over Real Madrid ahead of El Clasico later this evening.
