Atletico Madrid moved to three points clear at the top of the La Liga table with a 2-0 win over Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez on Sunday.
Atletico Madrid had the first half-chance of the game in the fifth minute as Diego Costa broke into the Getafe box before firing a low ball to the back post which David Villa just could not reach.
The visitors were then unlucky not to have broken the deadlock as Godin got his head to the end of a Koke cross but it was well saved by Codina on the half-hour mark.
Diego Simeone’s men then did break the deadlock in the final five minutes of the first-half as Godin’s header found the corner after a lovely cross-field ball from Gabi, to give the visitors a 1-0 lead going into the half-time interval.
Getafe came close to grabbing pulling level in the 56th minute as midfielder Rodriguez met a corner but his header was well saved by Courtois at close-range.
Atletico should have doubled their advantage as Costa was adjudged to have been fouled in the box by Alexis who was given his marching orders in the 65th minute.
The striker then stepped up to take the spot-kick but he was denied by Getafe’s keeper who did brilliantly to save the rebound as well, and keep the score at 1-0 to the visiting side.
Costa then made up for his earlier penalty miss as he doubled the Madrid’s side advantage with a close-range finish in the 84th minute to make it 2-0, the striker did however crash into the post and suffered a nasty injury and had to be stretchered off.
The win means that Atletico move three points clear at the top of the table with Getafe struggling in the relegation zone.
