Kompany V Wazza In Manchester Derby

The Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium will be more intriguing than usual this Sunday.

After all, it will be the first taste of the biggest match in England’s modern football capital for both teams’ new managers.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini and his United counterpart David Moyes have inherited tough positions, and neither has enjoyed an entirely smooth introduction to their new jobs.

Tie on the log with seven points from four matches, the derby gives both Manchester teams the chance to win local bragging rights until the reverse fixture later in the season, and to push on their bids to win the Premier League again.

But the clash between the managers won’t be the only head-to-head confrontation worth looking out for.

City’s defensive rock, skipper Vincent Kompany, will start his first league match since recovering from injury. And he will be tasked with shackling United striker Wayne Rooney, who has exploded into venomous form.

It is a challenge Kompany says he is ready to embrace excitedly.

"It's brilliant he's doing so well again," said Kompany of Rooney, after making a successful comeback in City’s Champions League win over Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday night.

"You want to play against top players at their best. That's personally how I feel about it.

"I always want to play against players when they are at their best. I'm really happy for Wayne that he's on top form.

"This is the great thing about the Premier League: you play against top strikers all the time. But there are many players to watch out for in both teams."

Rooney meanwhile, is champing at the bit to get at City’s defences.

He is fighting fit and scoring again, something he credits Moyes for.

"The training is a bit different under the new manager," said Rooney in the Daily Express.

"I remember it from Everton. It's more intense. That's helping me. I'm glad to be out playing.

"He's a great manager and thoroughly deserves this job because of what he did at Everton. It's good to work under him and, hopefully, be successful together."
