Keshi Hands In Shock Resignation

Less than 24 hours after lifting the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title, Nigeria coach Steven Keshi has handed in his resignation.

The Super Eagles tactician had hinted that he could be on his way out while he was still at the tournament, and reports coming out of the country claim that the former captain left his role due to the conduct of his superiors.

The reports claim that his decision was made after the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) booked flights home after being drawn with Cote d'Ivoire in the quarter-finals, according to a former official of the national side.

Reports also suggested the NFF attempted to remove Keshi prior to their quarter-final clash with the Elephants and the former national public relations officer, Idah Peterside, has claimed that the conduct of senior officials caused the problem.

"Keshi only heard the NFF had given the secretary money for return tickets before the Ivory Coast game, after they had won the game," he wrote on Twitter.

Nigeria Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi says that he read about the news on the internet, but after contacting the NFF, they "claimed ignorance" about the matter.

"I just read it...), and immediately called the Nigeria Football Federation President, Aminu Maigari who (also) claimed ignorance about the matter. Maigari told me that he has not received a letter of resignation from Keshi and the story was a rumour and unfounded," the minister said, according to Goal.

This continued to reflect badly on the federation though, as Keshi had spilled the beans on South African radio station Metro FM.
