Schweinsteiger New Germany Captain

Germany’s national team coach, Joachim Low, has named Bastian Schweinsteiger, his new captain after Philipp Lahm retired from international football.

Low revealed his decision at his pre-match press conference for the friendly against Argentina ahead of the replay of the World Cup final.

"Our new target is the European Championship, where we want to reach the final in Paris," he said.

"Bastian Schweinsteiger will be our new captain. We have been working for ten years together and he is respected in coaching team and the squad."

The 30-year-old is the oldest player in a new Germany squad after Miroslav Klose and Per Mertesacker retired as well.

He has been capped 108 times, scoring 23 goals for his country, and was one of the key figues for Germany’s success at the World Cup in Brazil.

The other new key figures in Germany’s squad are Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, Sami Khedira and Mats Hummels.

However, Low will have to play his first game after the World Cup without his new captain, who will be rested due to some minor injury problems.

Argentina, however, will also miss their team captain, Lionel Messi, when Germany meet Argentina tomorrow night.

Do you think Bastian Schweinsteiger will lead Germany to more success in the future? Have your say in the comment section below.
