A single first half goal from Branislav Ivanovic handed Chelsea a hard fought 1-0 win over Manchester City in an English Premier League match at the Etihad on Monday night.
City started the brighter of the two teams and controlled the flow of play early on with Yaya Toure as the main protagonist in attack.
In the 16th minute the Ivorian international had the first real chance on goal when he fired a shot from just inside the box inches over the crossbar.
Two minutes later and Toure created an opening for David Silva after making his way to the byline, beating two defenders on his way there, before cutting the ball back for the Spaniard who shot narrowly wide from six-yards out.
In the 22nd minute some great individual work from Edin Dzeko saw him cut into the box from the right side of the field, but he also shot just wide from inside the box for City.
With City doing all the attacking their defensive line pressed higher up the field and they were almost caught on the counter-attack in the 27th minute. A fast break out off a cleared corner saw Chelsea in a four-on-one situation in attack, but Ramires failed to make the most of it when Joe Hart produced a fine save to deny him from 16-yards out.
With that opening on goal Chelsea’s confidence grew and four minutes later the visitors took the lead when Branislav Ivanovic made the most of a poor clearance, powering the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net from 20-yards out, 1-0.
Chelsea finished the stronger of the two teams and were unlucky not to double their lead a minute before the break when Samuel Eto’o hit the post after latching onto a low left-wing cross from Eden Hazard at the back post.
The start of the second 45 saw City on the attack as they went in search of the equaliser and Toure came close five minutes after the restart when he volleyed the ball agonisingly wide from just inside the box.
Two minutes later, however, and Chelsea struck the woodwork for a second time after a thunderous 30-yard shot from Nemanja Matic hit the outside of the right-post.
In the 67th minute Chelsea hit the post for a third time when Gary Cahill met a Willian corner-kick with a strong header, but his ten-yard effort came off the post.
Only a superb save from Petr Cech kept Chelsea in the lead six minutes later when he acrobatically tipped a 24-yard free-kick from Silva over the bar.
