Angel Di Maria joined Manchester United for £58.7 million, a new British transfer record, but is he worth all this money?
The deal takes United’s summer spend to £130.7 million, more than the club have spent in other transfer window before.
Di Maria was the club’s biggest signing and a few suggest the Argentine was ‘overpriced’ or a ‘panic buy’.
However, if you look at his stats and form from last season, you can hardly believe that Real Madrid sold one of their key players.
The 26-year-old scored 11 goals and assisted further 26 in all competitions for the Los Blancos and was praised by Carlo Ancelotti. Diego Simeone recently even described him as the Los Blancos' 'best player'.
Ancelotti played him slightly out of position and transferred the natural winger into a central midfielder, where his fine performances surprised many.
He won the Man of the Match award in the Champions League final, scored in the Copa del Rey final and, in general, seemed to pitch up in most of Real’s big games.
Given the fact that United are not in the Champions League this season, the capture of Di Maria represents a coup for the Red Devils.
Many see him as a game changer and his versatility will help Van Gaal, who already indicated the pacey winger will allow him to change his system.
The Spanish giants reportedly initially wanted £75 million for Di Maria but United ended up paying one-fifth less. The £59.7 million are only £9.7 million more than Chelsea did for Fernando Torres – the previous English record transfer.
Di Maria should be registered on time to be available for Real’s next game against Burnley and he surely has the potential to change the mood at Old Trafford following a dismal start into the campaign.
