International Friendly
Result: USA 2-1 Nigeria
Date: 7 June 2014
Venue: EveBank Field
Jozi Altidore bagged a brace as USA defeated Nigeria 2-1 in an international friendly at EveBank Field.
Altidore's brace ensured Jurgen Klinsmann's go into the World Cup unbeaten in their last four encounters, while Stephen Keshi's men remain winless in their last four matches.
The opening 30 minutes proved to be a dull affair, with neither side managing to create any openings in the final third, although Nigeria enjoyed large spells of possession.
Ogenyi Onazi tried his luck in the 30th minute but the midfielder fired his effort well wide of the target.
A minute later and the hosts were ahead through strike Jozy Altidore, who made no mistake from close range after some good work by Fabian Johnson down the right flank.
Nigeria should have pulled one back minutes later as Roman Azeez floated in an inviting cross, but no one managed to attack the ball.
Demarcus Beasley should have doubled the home side's lead in the 39th minute as he blasted over from inside the area.
While at the other end, Victor Moses' long range strike forced Tim Howard into a routine save.
Efe Ambrose should equalised for the Super Eagles just before the halftime break but the Glasgow Celtic directed his header straight Howard.
Vincent Enyeama came to Nigeria's rescue in the 65th minute, as Clint Dempsey was left one on one with Enyeama, but the Lille goalkeeper pulled off a fine save to keep out Dempsey's effort.
Three minutes later and the hosts increased their advantage, as Altidore slammed him his second of the game, after latching onto Michael Bradley's long ball.
Victor Moses pulled one back for the Super Eagles in the 86th minute from the penalty spot, after he had been fouled in the box.
However, the USA defence managed to stand firm against the Nigerian's late cameo to hold on for the win.
