Inter Milan steamed past rivals AC Milan on Sunday evening after beating Chievo 3-1 at the San Siro to go fourth.
Antonio Cassano, Andrea Ranocchia and Diego Milito were all on the scoresheet for Inter as they took advantage of dropped points by Napoli, Lazio and Milan at the weekend.
Luca Rigoni fired in the only goal for the visitors while they also needed goalkeeper Christian Puggioni to put on an inspired performance to ensure that Inter only bagged three.
The hosts took just two minutes to grab the advantage as a corner was swung to the far post by Cassano where both Ranocchia and Juan Jesus failed to nod the ball home. The rebound came back to Cassano who drilled his finish in at the near post.
Francesco Acerbi wasted a glorious chance to equalise in the 12th minute but they would pull level nine minutes later when Rigoni buried a header from eight yards out.
Esteban Cambiasso was denied by a great save by the goalkeeper but Inter would regain the lead soon after when Ranocchia rose high to meet a Cassano corner and nodded home.
Gargano then rattled the woodwork with a superb free-kick in the 37th minute and no teammates were on hand to put away the rebound.
Inter remained in charge after the break though and six minutes in Milito thumped Inter's third into the back of the net after a cross from Cambiasso.
Puggioni made a spectacular double save with 20 minutes to go while he constantly thwarted attempts from Inter to extend their advantage.
The hosts had done enough though and walked away with a morale-boosting victory and three important points.
In other matches, Parma and Genoa played out a goalless draw while Atalanta and Catania achieved the same feat.
Bologna shared the spoils with Siena while Mario Balotelli spared AC Milan's blushed with a late penalty as they drew 1-1 at Cagliari.
Palermo and US Pescara could not be seperated in their match while Sampdoria strolled to a 3-1 win over Roma.
Udinese picked up vital points with a 1-0 win at home to Torino.
