Iniesta Backs Messi For Five

Andres Iniesta believes Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi deserved to win the 2012 Ballon d'Or, and has backed the Argentine to win the award for a fifth time.

Messi became the first player to win the accolade four times in a row after plundering an unmatched 91 goals last year, surpassing Gerd Muller's long-standing mark of 85.

And Iniesta, who placed behind runner-up Cristiano Ronaldo in the voting, backs 25-year-old Messi to continue his assault on the record books.

"I dedicate it to Barca, [and to] the work we do. If he continues then Leo will get a fifth [Ballon d'Or]," Iniesta told Esport3.

"I congratulate Leo again for his fourth Golden Boot, which makes it unique. It is not a matter of giving it to others, it is a matter of recognising the best there is - that is what has happened."

Iniesta, a World Cup, European Championship and Champions League winner, is hopeful he enjoys further success in his decorated career.

"In this game you have to enjoy the time you have playing at the top," said the 28-year-old Spaniard.

"And, hopefully, I can do that for a long time and win more trophies.

"My personal achievements have been very good so far and that is what I aim for, you work to get them. The truth is that being where I am right now makes me incredibly happy."
