A brace from Gonzalo Higuain saw Napoli back to winning ways after beating Lazio 4-2 in a Serie A match at the Stadio Olimpico on Monday night.
The start of the match saw both sides playing a little cagey and chances on goal were few and far between.
The only decent effort early on came in the fifth minute as a quick turn inside the box by Antonio Candreva saw him lose his marker, but his shot on goal lacked direction and went narrowly wide from 14-yards out.
After a slow start to the game, however, chances began to flow at both ends of the park.
In the 16th minute Lazio registered their first shot on target as Anderson Hernanes tested the fingertips of Pepe Reina, but the keeper was up to the task.
Three minutes later and Abdoulay Konko tried his luck from 25-yards out, but his shot, which was well-struck, went just wide.
In the 24th minute Napoli created their first real scoring opportunity and it resulted in a goal as
Higuain burst into the Lazio box, beating one defender, before slipping the ball calmly past the goalkeeper, 1-0.
Lazio, though, responded immediately as Candreva’s dangerous cross was put into his own net by Valon Behrami a minute after going behind, 1-1.
In the 37th minute Higuain thought he restored Napoli’s lead when he tucked home a Lorenzo Insigne shot that had been parried into his path by the goalkeeper, but he was ruled off-sides.
Lazio, though, had the last say of the half as some questionable defending from Napoli saw them give the ball away cheaply to Candreva, but he shot into the side-netting from a tight angle.
The second 45 saw Napoli take control of the game as they dictated terms in the middle of the park and outplayed the home side with their slick passing game.
Five minutes after the restart Napoli took lead for a second time after the Lazio defence failed to deal with a left-wing cross from Higuain which resulted in a goalmouth scramble, and Goran Pandev was on hand to tuck home the ball from close range in his 300th Serie A appearance, 2-1.
In the 59th minute Higuain came close to finding his side’s third goal when he broke into the box from the right-flank. He, however, saw his shot from a tight angle go through the goalkeeper’s legs, but inches wide of the target.
Higuain did manage to grab his second goal in the 72nd minute when he broke beyond the Lazio defence and produced a clinical finish to make it 3-1.
Lazio tried to find their way into the game, and they managed a consolation goal three minutes from time thanks to a goal from Keita Balde, 3-2.
The result, though, was put beyond doubt in the first minute of extra time as Jose Callejon found the back of the net with a sublime finish in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper, 4-2.
The three points for Napoli leaves them third on the Serie A table, three points behind second placed Roma and six behind leaders Juventus
