Henry: Beating Spurs Is Small Consolation

Hot on the heels of Freddie Ljunberg, who berated Arsenal for celebrating finishing fourth in the Premier League this season as if they had won the whole bang shoot, Thierry Henry has become the latest ex-Gunner to admonish the club.

The bona fide Arsenal legend thinks that the club should be doing much better than simply eking into a European qualifying position by the skin of their teeth on the last day of the season.

And he has questioned the scenes of jubilation that followed Arsenal’s final day win over Newcastle.

"Yes, they finished in the top four. But there is only one champion: Manchester United," Henry told Sky Sports News.

"I'm a competitor, so there is only one thing I can remember from 2013 - and that is that United won the league.

"For me, as a fan and as a player at Arsenal, we should be in the top four as normal - but [instead] it saved our season."

Having said that, ‘Titi’ remains a Gunner through and through.

And so he says that after beating their arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur to the coveted final Champions League position, perhaps a small celebration was actually in order.

But, Henry says, beating Spurs is small consolation when the main prize was so far out of reach.

"I know we can have a go about the pictures of them celebrating finishing fourth, but you have to understand that, for any Arsenal player, when you really feel the shirt and really play for the club, putting Tottenham out of the top four [is a big deal] - and I really do hope that's what they were celebrating,” Henry added.

"But, and I said it when we did it to [Tottenham] in 2006, for me that's the only thing we could celebrate."
