Gunners Unveil Trophy Hunting Ozil

Mesut Ozil has been introduced to the world as an Arsenal player at a press conference in London on Thursday.

The German international midfielder has reiterated that Gunners manager Arsene Wenger sweet-talked him on the phone, and convinced him to embrace the challenge that awaits him at the Emirates.

It was a shock for Ozil when he was jettisoned by Real Madrid, but he has warmed to the idea of being an Arsenal player and cannot wait to get started.

“It feels great, I feel very good here. I'm sure the boss will improve me and I'm proud to be part of the team,” Ozil said, when asked to describe his emotions on joining Arsenal.

“I talked to [fellow German internationals and now Gunners team-mates Per] Mertesacker and [Lukas] Podolski about the club. I've only heard positive things,” he added.

Debate is raging as to whether or not Ozil’s silky playmaking abilities will be suited to the hurly-burly of the English Premier League.

Some say the slight midfielder will simply be swept aside, without being allowed the time to dwell on the ball and plot his killer passes.

But he is confident that he will be able to handle anything the EPL’s defenders throw his way.

“I've watched a lot of Premier League games, of course it's very physical but this is a man's sport,” he said.

Before ending his first media assignment for his new club with a buoyant cry of “I’m a Gunner!”, Ozil insisted his confidence extends to Arsenal’s ability to end their long title drought.

“Of course [we can challenge for the title],” he said. “This is one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Meanwhile, having won Ozil over by giving him “the respect” the player says he needs and lost at Madrid, Wenger has predicted a bright Gunners future for the former La Liga winner.

“Ozil has a style that will integrate our style of play,” the Frenchman said.

“He has all the attributes to be one of our leaders.”
